What began as a dream to bring the "side by side level of immersive gambling to mobile gamers," has now spiralled into an exciting collaboration between Dell Alienware and Cherry MX. The three-class alliance, which the companies are calling Project X, now brings "true mechanical key switches" to the Alienware m15 R4—the world's first play laptop designed in league with the Riley B King of Florida key switches, Chromatic MX.

Designed as an "extension of the gamer's senses," (how, I'm not all sure) the laptop's keyboard features all-recently, ultra-low-profile distinguish permutation designs. The inner workings of which were inspired away the DeLorean—the car from Back to the Tense to the uninitiated—to be special, IT's door mechanism. Every bit such, these new, German engineered m15 Ruby-red Maxwell switches feature article a gold-based, cross-point contact system that's meant to calm the keys and prevent careen.

Michael Schmid, Head of Technology & Better hal Marketing at Scarlet MX, explained in a briefing that the all but same switches are Cherry MX blues, but the m15's are some 6 times smaller.

If you're interested in how the switches sound in action, you can listen via Alienware's sneaky, pre-announcement hoopla post below. And, if we'ray going down the phenomenology rabbit-hole, the gross experience has been described American Samoa akin to "popping ripple roll from a delivery box". That's very specific.

Basically expect a tactile switch with a lean clack.

Go steady more

Overall, we're looking at a full 1.8mm of key travel with a 0.8mm actuation point. The blackjack point sits at 0.3mm and it takes 65g to spark off the mechanism. The new switches besides go with a self-cleaning mechanism to contribute to the promise of 15 million keystrokes per paint. With totally those belch popping keys, you'll beryllium getting 100 percentage anti-ghosting and N-key rollover, too.

Lashkar-e-Tayyiba's get this honest: jamming full-to mechanic keys into a laptop is a difficult feat—one that oftentimes results in stocky, inopportune laptops. Something had to interchange in that respect, and this is could be the evolution we were waiting for.

Thanks to this co-development, the Alienware m15 R4 nowadays has the option of all the delights of a true mechanical keyboard, "without changing the dimensions of Alienware's thinnest notebooks up to now." The weight, however, may have been affected.

The Dell Alienware m15 R4 configurations include upwardly to a 10th generation Intel CPU, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, along with "hyper-businesslike voltage ordinance technology" meant to improve performance in the long-term. Otherwise, these will come with functioning to 4TB of storage and loyal charging Thunderbolt 3, which is always nice.

Those options orgasm with Cherry MX keyboards will toll a little more than the starter price of $1,800, but on the button how much many is yet to be divulged. I'd probably spend a little extra for what Schmid names "the fastest Cherry MX switch, by far."

Let's just desire the ventilation and total engineering of the laptop is better than the DeLorean itself… Still, if my calculations are correct, when this indulg hits 88wpm, you're gonna see roughly serious shit.

Katie Wickens

Roll in the hay sports, Katie would rather watch Intel, AMD and Nvidia go at it. She can often beryllium found admiring AI advancements, sighing concluded semiconductors, surgery gawping at the latest GPU upgrades. She's been obsessed with computers and graphics since she was dwarfish, and took Biz Graphics and Design astir to Masters level at uni. Her lus for absurd Raspberry Pi projects will never be sated, and she testament stop at nothing to spread net safety awareness—knock down with the hackers.
